Diesel Trucks - The Dodge Ram 2500 With Direct Injection Diesel Power Engine.

Diesel trucks are slowly making their entry in the US market. While in other parts of the world diesel trucks and diesel cars are used in large numbers, the American drivers have a low impression about using diesel fuel in cars and trucks. While this may have been a valid reason some 25 years back, with up gradation of the engine technology and improvement in the grades of fuels, the pollution angle argument is no longer valid. The diesel engines and gasoline engines are basically power generating engines but their mode of operation is slightly different. The gasoline engine makes use of a spark plug to ignite the rich mixture of gas and air. The Diesel engine, on the other hand does not need any spark plug, but uses the direct injection of the fuel air mixture into the hot cylinder to generate power. The diesel engine is able to generate higher compression in the engine than the gasoline engine... Generally a catalyst is used to convert the exhaust gases in the case of the diesel engine. Technically there is greater power or greater energy in diesel fuel than in gasoline. The diesel engines can operate at higher compression ratios.

While the diesel truck is still in a trial stage in the US market, in the other parts of the world the diesel trucks are very popular and used extensively. The European market has been using both diesel trucks as well as diesel cars since a long time. Diesel fuel is a little cheaper and available in every pump. In the developing countries the situation is still more in favor of diesel trucks. In the Asian countries almost the majority of trucks use diesel as the fuel. The reason is mainly economical. In these countries the diesel fuel is much cheaper than the gasoline.

With greater emphasis being put in environmental conservation and the introduction of the hybrid cars, the scope for use of diesel trucks in USA is slowed down. The emphasis is now more on utilizing non polluting energy like solar power or electric than changing over to diesel fuel. A few years back when there was worldwide fuel crisis the use of diesel appeared to be imminent. But this was an illusion and the US public strongly went back to the use of gasoline fuels. It appears that we may have to wait a little longer for the Diesel fuel to get a head start in the US. Thus the immediate future there is no scope for a large scale market for diesel trucks in the U S.
