The first luxury Lincoln pickup truck from Ford Motor Company, the Lincoln
Blackwood, was unveiled in the January 1999 international auto show in USA, but couldn’t become a success story in
the market of light pickup trucks. Blackwood was marketed late due to late arrival of cargo boxes; the first sales
came in October 2001 and immediately stalled in 2002, the model could penetrate only the Mexican borders for sale
till 2003. The final models were sold well below MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price). The Lincoln division
of Ford came up with a new luxury American pickup truck, the Mark LT in 2006. All the shortcomings of Blackwood
were rectified and newer enhancements made; the model came with new vigor and enthusiasm, subsequent models were
improved in terms of interior cosmetics, grille design and navigation system, but the sale benchmark of 13,000
trucks per year was never touched, rather the 2008 year could make only about 4600 sales, where after the model was
discontinued in the US. The final models were sold with huge discounts, about more than $10,000 below the
MSRP.
Although the Mark LT Lincoln pickup truck was considered an indicator of
luxury, quality and sophistication, and a hallmark of lavish lifestyle, but it could not encroach the already
occupied US market by other giant automakers. Based on Ford F-150 model, the first model was available in 4x2 and
4x4 configurations with 4 side doors, 5.5 foot bed and 300 hp Triton V8 engine. In 2009, the Lincoln Mark LT pickup
was replaced with Ford F-150 Platinum and thus came to extinction in US, whereas continued in Mexico. The main
design highlights of the Mark LT luxury pickup were affluence of glitter, more chrome wrapping on tail lamps and
tailgate, chrome-plated wheels, plush interior leathering, sheepskin floor carpeting, outclass dashboard and
instruments, metallic color theme, dazzling door handles, perfect audio controls, stiff and stable frame and
suspension, increased braking stability and steering precision, smooth ride and excellent towing capabilities, but
the main criticism came from overpricing and some structural issues due to which it couldn’t capture the
market.
Does Ford still manufacture the Lincoln pickup truck?
Yes! The 2010 Lincoln Mar LT, but that is not sold in America due to lackluster performance in the US market in
2008; it is for Mexican auto market only. The Lincoln Mark LT pickup has been a successful selling vehicle only in
Mexico. The American counterpart of 2010 Lincoln Mark LT is the F-150 Platinum, which is also sold in Mexico.
Equipped with 5.4 liter V8 engine at 310 hp and 365 lbs-ft of torque, this new Mark LT has the potential to haul up
to 1695 lbs and tow up to 10,000 lbs. Two options of the cargo box are available: 5.5 ft and 6.5 ft, and similarly
the buyer can opt for two or four-wheel drive as per traction requirements. The model entails the salient features
of F-150. Commodious cabin, superior leather seats, entertainment, safety airbags, reinforced roof and electronic
stability are the features that attract customers and make it a real luxury pickup truck. In spite of all elegance,
chromed body and sophistication, it is perfectly ideal for tough terrain like mountainous regions, sea shores and
forests.
The 2007 Lincoln Mark LT is a luxury truck that came with little variations from the previous
model, for example, slight revision in grille, headlights and the new DVD navigation system. More chrome was
scattered around the body, bumpers, grille and taillights. The large cargo box of 6.5 foot was added. Interior came
with leather upholstery, heated front seats, faux wood trim and rear seat entertainment. But unlike most other
pickups it lacked the side airbags and electronic stability controls. Pickup
truck seats symbolize the comfort and splendor of a luxury car, and in this regard the 2007 Mark LT had wider
seats with contrasting strips that added extreme elegance to the cabin. Finally, the vehicle gave remarkably good
ride. But unfortunately, it didn’t impart the required impetus to Lincoln pickup truck to push it into the high
sale zones of US automobile market.
Used models of the Mark LT luxury pickup truck are now available on the market from several
online outlets with aggressive offers.
A Navigation System helps you find your destination; available on the entire line of Lincoln
pickup trucks, the system is guided by satellites and an onboard DVD containing
map of the U.S and some parts of Canada. Interaction with the system is through touch-screen controls. The system
has high-quality graphics and menus for accessing various features. You can find coffee shops or Chinese restaurant
on your driving route.
Lincoln pickup truck unfortunately lasted only for two years in the market; it couldn’t attract US buyers. High
price and only 4-speed automatic transmission gear etc were severely criticized; its cabin, although luxurious, was
not significantly different from the Ford versions. The models incorporated several upscale interior and exterior
styles, but couldn’t impress the US customers.
